Sixth Grade at King School marks an essential bridge between childhood and early adolescence — a time when students develop confidence, independence, and a more profound sense of who they are as learners and community members.

The Grade 6 learning environment is intentionally structured to support the academic and social-emotional needs of adolescents. Our faculty cultivates a classroom culture where students feel supported and challenged. Through hands-on, inquiry-driven learning, students engage directly with complex ideas across disciplines and learn to apply foundational skills to increasingly sophisticated coursework.

Students begin to take greater ownership of their learning, strengthening time management, organization, and critical thinking skills that prepare them for success throughout Middle School.

A Middle School Experience That Fosters the Whole Child

King’s Middle School program encourages each student to explore their academic, artistic, and athletic talents in a balanced and developmentally appropriate way. Sixth graders begin to discover their strengths, stretch their capabilities, and find joy in learning across a broad array of disciplines.


Goals: Time Management, Organization, and Critical Thinking

In Grade 6, students sharpen the executive-function skills essential for success in Middle School—learning to manage their time effectively, stay organized, and approach academic challenges with thoughtful, flexible reasoning.

King’s inquiry-based approach encourages students to take an active role in their learning. They develop strong research habits, apply knowledge to real-world situations, and gain confidence as independent thinkers. Hands-on exploration across disciplines helps students make meaningful connections, deepen understanding, and build the resilience needed for increasingly rigorous coursework.

Academic Program

English

King School’s Middle School English program helps students develop strong reading, writing, and communication skills while discovering their individual voices as emerging adolescents. Through a rich selection of diverse literature, students learn to think critically and engage thoughtfully in discussions about identity, society, and responsible citizenship. Close reading, analytical and creative writing, vocabulary development, and explicit grammar instruction form the academic backbone of the program, while project-based learning encourages creativity, collaboration, and meaningful connections across disciplines. Faculty cultivate a supportive environment that promotes inquiry, empathy, and confidence as students prepare for the demands of Upper School.

In Grade 6, Fundamentals of Communication introduces students to multicultural texts that broaden their understanding of global perspectives and deepen their awareness of self and community. Students strengthen foundational literacy skills as they transition from elementary to middle school expectations—learning to read closely, communicate clearly, and write with purpose. Through process-based instruction, they craft well-organized analytical paragraphs, narratives, and creative pieces, while grammar study builds precision and fluency. Whole-class conversations, small-group collaboration, independent reading, and a vibrant reading program help students develop both skill and enthusiasm as lifelong readers and writers.

History
 

King School’s Middle School history program develops students’ understanding of human civilization through the close study of primary and secondary sources. Students learn to examine evidence, analyze differing perspectives, and construct well-reasoned interpretations—skills strengthened through research, debate, and discussions that highlight the complexity and nuance of historical inquiry.

In Grade 6, students engage in Global Perspectives, an exploration of major world regions with a focus on Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Through the study of geography, culture, economic and political systems, and the connections between ancient and modern history, students gain a broad view of how societies develop and interact. Classroom dialogue, text-based analysis, technology-enhanced activities, and collaborative projects help bring these regions to life. The curriculum strengthens students’ ability to compare and contrast global experiences, appreciate cultural diversity, and understand the interconnectedness of the modern world—all essential skills for thoughtful global citizenship.

Science

King School’s Middle School science program cultivates students’ identities as young scientists by fostering curiosity, analytical thinking, and hands-on exploration. Across Earth science, biology, and physics/chemistry, students engage in inquiry-driven learning that emphasizes observation, experimentation, data analysis, and evidence-based reasoning. Collaborative projects, guided research, and problem-solving activities challenge students to make connections across disciplines, recognize patterns, and communicate scientific findings effectively.

In Grade 6, Earth Science provides a foundation for scientific literacy through the study of Earth’s systems, forces of motion, chemical principles, ecosystems, weather, climate, and human impact. Students apply the scientific method to real-world problems, collect and analyze data, and propose evidence-based solutions. Project-based learning encourages collaboration, critical thinking, and effective communication, while hands-on investigations connect science to students’ everyday experiences. This approach equips students with the skills and curiosity needed for continued success in Middle School science and beyond.

Math

King School’s Middle School mathematics program builds a strong foundation in logical reasoning, problem-solving, and abstract thinking while nurturing students’ confidence and enjoyment of math. Across Grades 6–8, students progress from arithmetic and emerging mathematical thinking toward pre-algebra, algebra, and introductory geometry, continually deepening their understanding and strengthening their ability to model real-world situations, communicate mathematically, and work both independently and collaboratively.

In Grade 6, students enter one of several pre-algebra pathways: standard, accelerated, or honors, each designed to meet learners at the appropriate pace and level of depth. All courses extend students’ prior knowledge while introducing key concepts such as negative numbers, algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities, ratios and proportions, percents, and geometric measurement. Students refine their use of precise mathematical language and symbols, explain and defend their ideas, and engage in tasks that strengthen conceptual understanding and procedural fluency. Honors students additionally develop the capacity to analyze mathematical texts and tackle novel, challenging problems.

This comprehensive approach prepares students for advanced math coursework while fostering curiosity, confidence, and an appreciation for the beauty and usefulness of mathematics.

World Language

King School’s Middle School World Language program introduces students to the oral and written forms of French, Spanish, or Mandarin Chinese while fostering cultural understanding and global awareness. Students develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through interactive activities, including dialogues, skits, and structured conversations. Writing instruction progresses from copying and reproducing sentences to creating original compositions, short letters, and paragraphs.

Cultural study is integrated throughout, helping students compare and contrast the traditions, values, and social practices of target-language communities with their own, fostering respect and a global perspective. Small class sizes provide ample opportunities for individualized attention, allowing students to practice communication, express ideas confidently, and develop proficiency. By the end of Level 1, students typically achieve ACTFL Novice-Low to Novice-Mid proficiency, building a strong foundation for continued language study in Middle School and beyond.

Performing Arts

King School’s Middle School Performing Arts program cultivates creativity, collaboration, and self-expression through music, choir, and theater. Every Grade 6 student participates in a major course in Instrumental Music, Choir, or Theater, building foundational skills while developing confidence, teamwork, and artistic literacy.

In Grade 6 Instrumental Music, students expand technical proficiency and musical understanding through carefully structured ensembles. Beginning musicians explore the fundamentals of band or strings, while more experienced students refine skills in intermediate or advanced ensembles. Instruction emphasizes reading music, understanding theory, and performing collaboratively, providing opportunities for creativity, cooperative learning, and personal growth.

Grade 6 Choir (Treble I) welcomes all students who enjoy singing. Repertoire spans diverse styles, harmonies, and historical periods, while students develop sight-reading, aural skills, and music theory. Performances throughout the year allow students to experience the joy of ensemble music and share their artistry with the school community.

Theater Explorations introduces students to the fundamentals of acting, improvisation, script analysis, auditioning, and stagecraft. Through practical exercises, creative projects, and collaborative performances, Grade 6 students cultivate self-awareness, empathy, and confidence while exploring their passion for the performing arts in a supportive and inspiring environment.

This comprehensive program provides Grade 6 students with a strong foundation in the arts, encouraging both individual expression and collaborative achievement, and preparing them to continue their artistic growth throughout Middle School.

Technology and Innovation

King School’s Middle School program in Computer Science, Engineering, and Innovation equips students with the digital literacy, problem-solving skills, and creative thinking necessary to navigate an increasingly technology-driven world. All students in Grades 6–8 engage in hands-on projects that progressively build technical proficiency while fostering ingenuity and practical application of digital tools.

In Grade 6, students begin by mastering basic computer terminology, digital safety, and effective use of Google applications through real-world, project-based learning. They also explore three-dimensional design using Tinkercad, manipulating shapes and employing various modeling techniques to create prototypes. These projects introduce foundational engineering concepts and design thinking, allowing students to tackle challenges, test solutions, and present their work. By the end of Grade 6, students gain a strong foundation in digital fluency, creative problem-solving, and collaborative innovation—skills that prepare them for advanced coursework and real-world applications.

Art and Design

King School’s Middle School Art and Design program fosters creativity, technical skill, and critical thinking through hands-on exploration of two-dimensional and three-dimensional media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital design. Students study the Elements of Art and Principles of Design alongside art history, applying these concepts to their own work while developing craftsmanship and the confidence to take creative risks.

In Grade 6, students complete projects of increasing complexity, culminating in an independent OPEN project that allows them to express personal vision and experiment with innovative approaches. Guided by digital sketchbooks, students brainstorm, plan, and reflect throughout the semester. Finished works are showcased in the OPEN Art Show, giving students the opportunity to present their creativity to the broader school community. This program nurtures artistic skill, self-expression, and thoughtful reflection, providing a strong foundation for continued exploration in the arts.

Life Skills

King School’s Middle School Life Skills program guides students in developing self-awareness, ethical reasoning, and social-emotional competence. The curriculum emphasizes decision-making, perspective-taking, and effective communication, helping students navigate the challenges of adolescence with confidence and integrity.

In Grade 6, students explore topics including self-understanding, teamwork, conflict resolution, respect for differences, human sexuality, and service to others. Classes are discussion-based and facilitated to encourage reflection, dialogue, and personal growth. By providing factual information, values clarification, and opportunities to practice ethical reasoning, the program equips students to make thoughtful, responsible choices in school, in the community, and in their everyday lives. This non-graded course fosters personal development, empathy, and a foundation for healthy, informed decision-making.


Clubs and Community Events

Advisory

King School’s Middle School Advisory Program provides students with personalized support, guidance, and mentorship throughout their Middle School experience. Every student is paired with an advisor who serves as a mentor, advocate, and primary contact between home and school.

In Grade 6, Advisors regularly meet with students to monitor academic progress, discuss personal growth, and address any questions or concerns. Advisors also facilitate goal-setting conferences with students and families, ensuring clear communication and collaboration in supporting each student’s development. At the end of each marking period, advisors review academic performance, goal attainment, and citizenship contributions, providing feedback that is included in end-of-year report cards. This program fosters strong student-adult relationships, promotes self-awareness, and encourages students to take ownership of their middle school journey.

Clubs

King School encourages Middle School students to engage in at least one club or activity outside the classroom, providing opportunities for leadership, collaboration, and personal growth. Students can explore a wide range of offerings—both faculty- and student-generated—allowing them to discover new interests and develop skills beyond the core academic program.

At the start of each school year, a club assembly introduces students to available options, giving them the chance to sign up and try different activities each semester. Clubs may reflect long-standing traditions at King or emerging student interests, and offerings include a diverse mix of creative, academic, and athletic pursuits. Examples include Circuitry Club, Art and Sculpture Club, Virtual Reality Club, First Lego League, Board Games Club, KING Cares, and more.

Participation in clubs helps Grade 6 students build community, explore passions, and develop collaboration and problem-solving skills in a fun, supportive environment. Whether working on hands-on projects, team challenges, or creative initiatives, students gain valuable experiences that complement their academic and co-curricular development while fostering curiosity, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

Athletics

King School Athletics provides a comprehensive program designed to complement the academic and personal growth of Middle School students. Through participation in team and individual sports, health, and wellness activities, students develop fundamental skills, strategic thinking, and an appreciation for physical fitness while learning the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal responsibility.

In Grade 6, students participate in one athletic offering per season — fall, winter, and spring —allowing them to explore a variety of sports and physical activities. Practices and competitions emphasize skill development, enjoyment, and engagement, with team placement determined by ability and, in some cases, grade level to ensure balanced rosters. Students experience competition at multiple levels, from intramural and developmental opportunities to interscholastic contests, all designed to foster confidence, resilience, leadership, and respect for self and others.

The program encourages self-discipline, commitment, and a strong work ethic, while nurturing a passion for achievement and excellence. Participation in athletics promotes physical, social, and mental well-being and strengthens the sense of community within the Middle School. Orientation, trial periods, and structured practice schedules ensure that each student can engage fully, explore new sports, and build both individual and team success.

Middle School U

Middle School U (MSU) is a hallmark of the Grade 6 experience at King, providing students with a supportive and engaging introduction to Middle School. This two-week program combines practical skill-building with opportunities to develop confidence, independence, and a sense of community.

In MSU, students learn essential habits and strategies that will support their success throughout Middle School. Units focus on executive functioning, including time management, organization, goal setting, flexible thinking, and working memory. Students practice problem-solving and collaboration through hands-on activities such as collaborative math challenges, scavenger hunts, and creative team exercises. Technology proficiency is emphasized, with students gaining familiarity with the MyKing portal, Google Classroom, and digital communication tools.

MSU also cultivates social and emotional growth, providing a structured environment for students to connect with peers, take intellectual risks, and practice effective communication. Through interactive lessons, team challenges, and guided reflection, students begin Middle School prepared, confident, and ready to engage fully in the academic and co-curricular life at King.
