Global ATHLETICS

Through its global programs, King School strives to further develop students’ sense and understanding of shared humanity while they investigate and experience the world. The interdisciplinary collaboration of our Global Studies and Service Learning programs, along with our Athletics Department, plays a significant role in helping students appreciate and embrace the cultural diversity of their local and global environments.

Combining authentic learning, leadership, and relationship building opportunities, these truly unique travel programs unite diverse student groups as they share in experiencing new cultures through immersive language and cultural activities, service, and athletic training and competitions.

These pursuits also highlight the power of bringing people together through sport, help participants find common ground with their Chinese and Colombian counterparts, and allow students to go beyond a focus on just winning to discover the inherent and impactful value of friendly competition. The combined areas of experience provide a richer immersive program that is valuable for building relationships and community abroad and at home.

International Programs

China Program

Utilizing connections in China, an integrated and interwoven program was established for members of our Boys Basketball Team, in combination with Global Studies and Mandarin language students, to share in a truly unique and immersive learning experience. Basketball games against Chinese schools and teams brought all of our students together throughout the trip, with the shared social experiences for the King students to interact with and get to know their Chinese counterparts, serving as a transformational aspect of the program.

Part of this transformation saw students, initially uncomfortable with many of the daily activities and nervous about separating from the King group, grow beyond their fear and dare to take risks, including volunteering for homestays with Chinese students at the end of the trip.

Through the basketball training and competition opportunities, the King players were also able to experience the power of sport to unite people and build community, to find common ground with students who did not speak their language, and to go beyond a focus on just winning to discover the inherent and impactful value of friendly competition.

Colombia Program

This distinctive initiative began as a 5k race and has developed into a substantial annual King Cares service program, providing numerous opportunities for students to be immersed in service over the course of each school year. Fully planned and executed by fall athletes, from the selection of the leadership model and development of the marketing plan to the coordination of community outreach and race-day logistics, the 5k supports the Orphaned Starfish Foundation (OSF) and local Boys and Girls Clubs.

For the week leading up to the race, students from an OSF orphanage in Colombia take part in homestays with King families, immersing fully in school life during their stay. The program culminates with student-athletes traveling to visit the orphanage in Colombia, spending significant time teaching ESL and various computer skills while also engaging in additional sports and service activities.

The King students involved discover many of the commonalities that exist across cultures with reciprocal learning experiences leading to further growth of student relationships and friendships.
