Beyond the Game: Leadership, Legacy, and Belonging

This October, King School is honored to welcome David Watts, educator, consultant, and advocate for equity in sports and education, for a dynamic three-day series of workshops and keynotes designed to empower students, coaches, parents, and faculty.

 OptimizedImage,,,OptimizedWatts is an educator, consultant, and student-athlete advocate dedicated to promoting equity in sports and education. He was a three-sport athlete in high school, as well as a Division 1 football player at UC Berkeley (Cal), receiving First-Team PAC-12 All Academic Team Honors. With over 20 years of experience working with educational institutions, David brings deep expertise and lived experience to the forefront of conversations about student identity, equity, and access. His work focuses on uplifting student-athletes and helping schools develop inclusive environments where all students can thrive.

Schedule of Events: 

Tuesday, October 7
6:30 p.m. Coaches’ Session: Coaching with the Equity Playbook | Middle School Main Commons
Athletic coaches will participate in an interactive grounding session to explore inclusive leadership and discover strategies for better supporting student-athletes. Participants will gain practical tools, essential language, and actionable skills for fostering inclusivity, equity, and a strong sense of belonging on and off the field.
Wednesday, October 8

10:00-11:00 a.m. Upper School Assembly: Leadership, Legacy, and Living Your Values | Performing Arts Center Theater
In a keynote experience for the entire Upper School, Watts will inspire students and faculty through storytelling, current events, and reflections on authentic leadership. He will discuss the importance of creating meaningful connections, the positive impact of inclusive practices,  and cultivating environments where all student-athletes can SHOW UP and excel both on and off the field.

11:55 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Making an Impact on and off the Field | Middle School Main Commons
Watts will spend a lunch session with the captains' council and affinity group leaders. Through an interactive Q&A, he will discuss supporting student-athletes and leaders with strategies to champion equity and build a more inclusive community.
 

6:30-8:00 p.m. Athlete Mindset: A Workshop for Athletes and Parents/Guardians Together | Middle School Main Commons
Parents and guardians of grades 8-12 will come together with their student-athletes to cultivate environments where students can excel athletically, learn ways to prepare for the next level, strengthen home–school partnerships, and honor the unique athletic journey.

8:15-9:15 a.m. Parent Coffee: Home-School Partnerships for Student-Athlete Success | Middle School Main Commons
This session invites parents and guardians to explore how identity and advocacy align with school and college partnerships, deepening collaboration in support of student success.

10:20-11:20 a.m. Coaching Mentor Session
Through engaging discussions, interactive workshops, and shared community moments, David Watts will provide a select group of King School coaches the chance to develop their own mentoring skills so they can be better equipped to guide and support new coaches in championing equity, fostering meaningful connections, and empowering student-athletes to lead with purpose.
