Middle School Dance Class
This course focuses on cultivating a well-rounded dancer and student through an environment of learning which promotes the discipline of dance. Students will learn based on the foundations of technique as well as anatomical awareness that is pervasive throughout their lives. Students are taught to be disciplined, proficient, confident, and open-minded individuals prepared for the inevitable challenges of dance.
Gaining movement skills and finding confidence and enjoyment within that movement are a focus of this course. Students will learn to see dance as an art form, a way of expression. Sometimes it is just the simple fun, joy and entertainment of dance that unite us. This course even allows the non-dancer to experience the wonder of dance; opened to all levels whether the student is a beginner, intermediate, or advanced dancer.
This course encourages versatility through additional training in various other dance forms/genres such as ballet, modern, contemporary, lyrical, jazz, tap, and hip hop.
Students will also survey dance by discussing topics from primitive to contemporary times while tracing its role through historical eras. Students will come to an understanding of their own culture and begin to respect dance as a part of the heritage of many cultures from areas around the globe as well as from their own communities. Students will receive historical and present day information and adapt their knowledge to the diversities of dance and society.
Dance is open to Grade 8 students and is a full year graded major. Class will meet six out of eight days in the rotation.
