A King Talk with Head of School Dr. Karen Eshoo

On Wednesday, September 12, the Upper School Community gathered in the PAC for a King Talk with Dr. Karen Eshoo. King Talks were introduced in 2014 and are modeled after Ted Talks, a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas through short videos from some of the most engaging speakers in the world. During her Talk, Dr. Eshoo fielded questions from students and provided insight on her life, passion, and preferred pizza toppings.

Things we learned:

Dr. Eshoo loves travel, cooking, and film. In traveling, she enjoys being a foreigner. "Being in a country where you do not speak the language puts you on your heels and it's humbling. I have to listen to people who are very different than I am and I learn a lot about their culture by being an outsider."

Luke Buttenwieser, President of the US Student Body, joined Dr. Eshoo on the stage and prepared the questions, which were submitted by students. "It was really great to learn more about our new head of school Dr. Eshoo at this King Talk. I think her discussion about her time in high school really resonated with the students. And I'm glad she settled the pineapple on pizza debate."

When asked 'Why King?" Dr. Eshoo replied, "I'm not interested in being in a place where it's just about customer service between providers and consumers. I want to be in a place where it's about the relationship, because the relationship makes it meaningful and makes it worth it. That's what I found here. When I came here...I fell in love, that's how I knew it was the place I wanted to be." Welcome to King, Dr. Eshoo!
