Summer Institute

YES! Students from over 40 different schools attend Summer Institute. These schools consist of Fairfield and Westchester County public and independent schools and boarding schools across the Northeast. And, like King in general, we experience a strong diversity of students from many different ages and backgrounds. Our Summer Institute students are motivated and have found their experience here academically and personally rewarding, regardless of who they are or where they are from.

The only exception to this rule is for Camp Little Vikings. It is for King students in Prekindergarten only. 

All fees must accompany the student’s registration form in order for the student to participate. The Summer Institute reserves the right to add or cancel courses at any time based on enrollment or staffing. If a class is canceled for any reason, we will immediately notify the student’s family and a refund will be issued. 

If you would like to cancel participation in Summer Institute, you may request a full refund until Friday, May 15.

Yes, some may be taken for credit with the approval of the student’s home school. Any of the six-week courses qualify as well as some three-week courses. Since a great deal of material must be covered in these six weeks, these classes move at a quick pace and up to two hours of homework is assigned per night. Only students who are prepared to move at this pace and complete significant nightly homework should consider these courses. In addition, we are very pleased that these classes have been officially recognized as credible "earn credit" courses by both independent and public school.

Other than classes taken for credit (see above) upper school academic classes assign 30 to 60 minutes of homework per night. Some of the middle school classes may have up to about 20 to 30 minutes of homework per night.

Most classes enroll between six and eight students. Our most popular classes may have as many as twelve to fourteen students enrolled.

Absolutely. We made the schedule such that you can pick a combination of the courses and make a personalized grouping of courses. Many students sign up for combinations of three-week courses, after their morning six-week courses, or students take a varied combination of three-week courses. Make your schedule as long or as short as your summer time permits.

Ideally, a student should enroll as early as possible in order to secure a spot in a given class. However, in the event that the class is not filled, a student may enroll up to the first day of class.

In most cases, yes. Missing classes becomes a bigger issue if the course is a “for credit” course. In this event, roughly a week’s worth of material is covered each day, which means that missing a day will require significant make-up work with the teacher. However, this can be worked out, and students who miss a day or two must take some initiative to catch up without impacting their experience and course completion.

Absolutely! One of the things we pride ourselves on is the individual attention that each student receives from his/her teachers. It is not at all uncommon for a teacher to telephone a student’s parents to discuss progress, to stay late or come in early to meet privately with a student, or to assess a student in a way that brings out their inherent abilities. The Summer Institute teachers are also happy, with a parent’s permission, to contact a student’s home school teacher in a given subject to get background information, discuss progress, and report results.

Yes! We offer three payment options:

• Pay in Full: The full balance is due at the time of registration.

• Pay in 2 Installments: A 25% deposit is due at registration. The remaining balance will be charged to the card on file on May 1. Please note, this option is available through April 15.

• Pay in 3 Installments: A 25% deposit is due at registration. The remaining balance will be split in two and charged to the card on file on April 1 and May 1. Please note, this option is available through April 1.
