Vikings Sweep the King Winter Showcase!

King Athletics hosted the annual Winter Showcase on Saturday, January 27, in recognition and celebration of our winter varsity athletes and teams. It was a great day for the King community that saw four events run from noon until 10:00 p.m. and brought many generations of current and hopeful Vikings out to be a part of the fun. Viking Pride provided spirit items, the Project Music Pep Band helped raise the energy and excitement on campus, and Walter’s Hot Dog Truck made sure no one left hungry!

The first event of the day was the always thrilling faculty and coach versus senior student basketball game. The faculty and coaches built an early lead, only to see the seniors come storming back. A big free throw from Mr. Lovewell and some missed three-pointers by the students helped the faculty and coaches come away with a hard-fought and well-played three-point win. Thank you to all the faculty members, coaches, and students who participated in such a great game!

Varsity Boys Basketball kept the ball rolling from there with an impressive 79-71 win over The Winchendon School (New York City)! In a tremendous back-and-forth battle, the Vikings made timely baskets and saw five players score in double figures. AJ Trimboli ’26 led the way with 16 points. George McCormack ’25 and Davion Pinn ’24 both added a dozen, while Henry Simon  ’26, and Justin Beazley ’27 had ten as well. The team will be back in action today at Brunswick School at 5:00 p.m.

Varsity Girls Basketball was also victorious on Saturday as the Vikings used suffocating team defense to limit the scoring chances for The Frederick Gunn School players en route to a big 45-19 win! A very balanced scoring attack was led by Ava Angelov ’25, who had 13 points, and Dahlia Barrett ’25, who chipped in eight points, with three other Vikings scoring at least five points. The girls are back in action today, Friday, February 2, in a very special game against Christian Heritage School at 4:15 p.m., as they celebrate senior Leina Wyatt ’24 and all she has done for the program!

Varsity Hockey completed the undefeated sweep for King in the final game of the night as the Vikings defeated Kingswood Oxford 4-1 in a key FAA league contest at Stamford Twin Rinks! Charlie Allard ’24 was strong in net all night, stopping 25 of 26 shots, while two goals from Logan Bruno ’26 and one each from Charlie Mattson ’25 and Ryan Wempen ’24 provided the scoring punch for the home team. Logan and Ryan also added assists, along with Ben Bradley ’24 (3), Thomas Matzelle ’26, Brandon Chan ’25, and Ryan Garvey ’24. Next up for the Vikings is another very important FAA contest on Wednesday, February 7, against Rye Country Day School at 4:00 p.m. at Twin Rinks.

Thank you to all of the fans for coming out to pack the gym and rink in support of the Vikings, and congratulations to our raffle and prize winners. We would also like to extend one more special shout-out to the Project Music Pep Band for their wonderful performances during the basketball games and to the Viking Pride parents for helping make the day even more special!

Let’s go, Vikings!
