Vikings Coaching Profile: Telly Zangas Takes the Helm of Varsity Boys Tennis
Zangas Profile

King School has a new face at the helm of the Varsity Boys Tennis team for the 2023 spring season. King Athletics is thrilled to appoint Telly Zangas as the Head Coach of the team starting with this season.

Zangas joins the King community with a wealth of tennis experience.

As a junior tennis player in his native Greece, Zangas represented Team Europe in the prestigious Davis Cup. He played collegiately at the University of North Carolina and has been a USPTA professional for over three decades since his graduation. Zangas has hosted events and clinics with John McEnroe, Arthur Ashe, Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, and other tennis superstars.

At King, Zangas steps into a Varsity Head Coach role for the first time. He looks forward to using his experience and passion for the game to inspire players both on and off the court.

“A good coach focuses on more than winning,” he said. “Success starts with identifying weaknesses and trying to correct them.”

His first objective is to help the players build morale. In a sport that requires mental fortitude, Zangas said that a shift in perspective and the development of confidence are critical.

“It's important for the players to believe in themselves,” he said. “As they develop skills, confidence will grow.”

Zangas plans to develop King’s program by first restructuring practices to use drill sets rather than the typical supervised point play approach. He said this approach will help toughen resolve on the court.

“Building a successful team is a process," said Zangas, who plans to take his team for intensive training in New Haven in the coming weeks. “The more you put into it, the better the results.”

The Boys Tennis team earned its first win of the season this week at Wooster School, delivering a resounding 7-0 sweep. The boys will return to action at Brunswick School on Monday, April 17. Matches at the King Street Campus in Greenwich will begin at 4:15 p.m.
