It’s been a big week of firsts and fierce competition. Thanks to our student-athletes, coaches, and fans for bringing the spirit every day. Let’s keep that Viking pride rolling!
Varsity Softball
The Varsity Vikings exploded offensively and never looked back in a dominant 19-5 run-rule shortened FAA league win over Rye Country Day School on Tuesday. Powered by a relentless offense and a masterful performance in the pitching circle by Elizabeth Tuttle ’27, King secured an impressive conference win in the Fairchester Athletic Association and season opener.
The win was also the first career victory for rookie head coach and former New Canaan High School and Springfield College softball standout Gillian Kane.
The Vikings sent an early message, erupting for nine runs in the top of the first inning, culminating in a three-run inside-the-park home run by Tuttle. The inning featured three hit batters, six walks, two wild pitches, and aggressive base running, with Tuttle herself stealing second, third, and even home to open the scoring.
Tuttle’s first-inning home run was just the beginning of her standout day. She reached base all four times at bat, went 3-for-4 with a home run and two singles, and scored three runs. She was also dominant in the circle, striking out 11 batters over five innings while limiting Rye Country Day to just a few solid hits.
Siena Gambino ’27 was electric at the plate, finishing 4-for-4 with a triple and four runs scored, capping off the performance with a 3-run blast in the fifth inning that put the game well out of reach at 19-5.
Catcher Emma Drexel ’27 also had a big day, reaching base in all three plate appearances and knocking in a run while catching a clean game.
On defense, Zeba Hart-Syed ’28 and Maya Gotler ’28 provided steady play in the infield. Gotler added two walks and a pair of RBIs from the cleanup spot.
By the end of five innings, the Vikings had totaled 19 runs on 11 hits, drawn 12 walks, and forced three pitching changes. Five King players recorded RBIs, and every starter either reached base or scored a run.
Varsity Boys Tennis
The Vikings got their first win of the season on Tuesday at Sterling Farms, as they defeated Master’s School 4-3 in an FAA league match! Earning three victories in the singles play, the team also got a big win at first doubles to secure the match. With a playing lineup of students in each grade, including three seniors and three Grade 9 students, this is a team on the rise and will be fun to watch this spring and for many seasons to come.
On Tuesday, the players performed with focus and determination, despite the frigid temperatures and high winds, with Ethan Schamberg ’25, Tyler Koons ’28, and Harry Dimou ’28 getting singles wins, and Campbell Essex ’25 and Nate Barry ’26 taking the doubles win. A special shoutout to Coach Patrick Fraser on earning his first career victory as King’s Head Tennis Coach!
Crew
The King Crew team opened the race season on Saturday at the Steve Neczypor Regatta in New Jersey. Congratulations to the Boys Quad boat of Michael Failla ’26, Jay Madan ’27, Kazuya Ishii ’27, and Michael Toolan ’28 for medaling in their race! This was a great starting point for the Vikings, who will continue to build on the foundation of dedication and hard work needed to succeed on the water, especially when dealing with the rough weather conditions at the start of this season. This was also the first regatta in his new role at the helm of the program for Head Coach Karnes McCarrick. With no seniors on the roster, and new energy in the program, this is an exciting team to watch the team get stronger and faster!
Varsity Girls Golf
The Varsity Girls Golf Team is off to an impressive start this season. In addition to battling frigid temperatures and tough early spring course conditions, they have competed against talented golfers with much success. The depth and breadth of King's starting lineup, coupled with the strong leadership of its senior captains, has earned the girls a 2-0-1 start in the FAA match play, in addition to a solid victory in a scrimmage match. The program has doubled in numbers over last year, and our FAA opponents now have no choice but to take notice! Head Coach Moira Snover has the program on the right track, and the team is on a mission this season to make a name for themselves on the course!
Varsity Girls Lacrosse
King School Girls Lacrosse is also off to a fantastic start this season! Kicking things off with a 17-8 win over Forman, the team followed this up with another strong performance in a 15-6 victory against Christian Heritage. Excitement is high as the Vikings take to the road today to face Williams School, looking to keep the momentum going and move to 3-0 in HVAL play!
Track & Field
King Track & Field shifted their weekend plans as the Iona Prep Invitational was moved from Saturday to Sunday due to weather. Though it was not a warm day on Sunday, it was at least dry and set the stage for some tremendous performances by the Vikings!
Numerous personal bests were established, and two school records were broken! At the end of the day, the Vikings earned 13 total medals in the meet!
