Congratulations to Marilyn Sommerville ’27, who earned an international Spotlight Prize in the 2026 ARTEFFECT competition, presented by the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes. Her award-winning artwork, “The Heart of a Hero,” honors Dr. Helen Taussig, the pioneering pediatric cardiologist whose groundbreaking work transformed the treatment of congenital heart defects and helped lay the foundation for modern pediatric cardiology.

The ARTEFFECT competition invites students worldwide to explore the stories of Unsung Heroes through original works of art and reflective writing, with winners selected by a panel of experts in art, design, and education. This year’s competition received thousands of entries from over 40 countries.

“I'm so proud that my artwork has gained a place among the work of many talented students worldwide,” said Marilyn. “The award was truly a surprise, and I am so happy that my hard work and dedication to making this piece has the potential to inspire students in the future.”

Marilyn’s piece was completed in the upper school Advanced Art 2 class, led by teacher Corina Alvarezdelugo. The project began in December, when Alvarezdelugo asked students to research a lesser-known historical figure and create artwork honoring that individual in the medium of their choice.

“After learning about Dr. Taussig, I wanted to create an artwork that exemplified her passion for helping others and the deep kindness in her heart,” shared Marilyn. “I hope viewers will feel a sense of connection through my artwork and be inspired to make a positive impact on the world.”

Marilyn sketched several ideas, ultimately settling on a large-scale 24” x 36” piece which she worked on in class and at home for several months, including over spring break.

“Ms. Corina was very supportive throughout the whole process, and I am incredibly grateful for her guidance,” she said. “The structure of her Advanced Art 2 class gave me the opportunity to receive feedback from my classmates, which helped me further refine my piece.”

Beyond recognizing this important historical figure, the project carried personal meaning for Marilyn. Born with a congenital heart defect herself, she recalled being drawn to Dr. Taussig’s story because of the physician’s life-saving contributions to children with heart conditions. In her artist statement, Marilyn reflected on the impact of learning about Taussig’s life and career, noting that the doctor’s work continues to help patients receive critical diagnoses and care today. Marilyn added that she was particularly inspired by Taussig’s perseverance in overcoming hearing loss, dyslexia, and gender barriers in medicine while dedicating her life to improving children's lives.

“Dr. Helen Taussig’s story taught me that compassion can truly change the world, and courage in the face of challenges creates a stronger character,” she said.

Currently on display in the upper school mezzanine, “The Heart of a Hero” features Taussig caring for a young patient, rendered in acrylic paint and quilted fabric on canvas. Warm red tones represent life, compassion, and hope, while cooler blue hues reference the challenges of blue baby syndrome, a condition Taussig helped treat through her pioneering research and surgical innovations. A stitched heart on Taussig’s sleeve reflects the experiences that shaped her character and commitment to others. Through the artwork, Marilyn captures the physician’s kindness, resilience, and lasting impact on medicine. 

"Marilyn consistently challenges herself to think more deeply, take creative risks, and make her work as meaningful as possible,” said Alvarezdelugo. “This award is a wonderful recognition of an exceptional piece, but it also reflects the curiosity, dedication, and sustained effort she has demonstrated throughout the year. I couldn't be prouder of her accomplishment."
