A new middle school event debuted this spring as students traded the usual Spring Dance for an energetic and interactive May Fair. The inaugural event brought students from Grades 6 through 8 together for an evening of fun.

Planned by members of the Middle School Student Council, with support from teacher Jordan Rochelson, the event transformed the usual dance format into an interactive fair complete with carnival-themed games, athletic activities, and community-building. Students began planning more than a month in advance, meeting several times to develop ideas and coordinate logistics. 

“We all thought together of the idea of a circus-like fair instead of the dance because, as we all know, middle school dances are awkward,” said Ella Breakstone ’30. “We all wanted to do something fun to break the ice.”

Planning the event took weeks as the students worked through logistical questions.

“It was challenging thinking about what to have because we had so many great ideas,” said Luke Powell ’30. “We thought about what the other students would like to make them all show up.”

The night attracted 45 students who enjoyed karaoke, ring toss, bag toss, s’mores, bedazzling, raffle prizes, and a soccer shooting station. 

“It was a huge success,” said Rochelson. “The kids really felt like it was one big party, and many were sad to leave at the end of the night.” 

Students are already thinking ahead to next year, suggesting additions like volleyball, football, ping-pong, and even a dunk tank to make the May Fair even bigger and better!
