Spring Athletes Eye Upcoming Season During Training Trips

Nine upper school spring athletic programs spent the recent break in Florida and Arizona, immersed in our annual spring training program. Baseball, Softball, Boys Lacrosse, Girls Lacrosse, and Track & Field traveled to Universal Studios in Orlando, hosted by KSA Events. Athletes from Boys and Girls Tennis spent time at the Saddlebrook Resort north of Tampa, and athletes from Boys and Girls Golf traveled for the first time to Scottsdale, Arizona!

Vikings Take On Universal Studios!
More than two hundred and twenty-five different schools from across the country made up KSA’s programs this year, with King’s teams taking part in training sessions, practices, clinics, games, and meets. Team bonding and culture building are all part of the Vikings' experience, as the athletes travel, stay, and play together, hitting the Universal parks, dining, and spending time in the sun. But central to it all is preparation for the spring season, which meant they all put in hard work to build and develop conditioning, skills, and ability to thrive upon returning home as they take on the rigors and challenges of the spring season.

Baseball
King Baseball traveled to Orlando for spring training, with athletes from both the Varsity and JV teams getting in on the action. Varsity finished the trip with two strong wins, while JV came together for the first time on the field, also for two games.

Varsity game one against Rivers School was cut short due to rain after the first inning and ultimately canceled. The Vikings bounced back in game two with a 5–0 victory over the Irondale Knights (MN). The win was powered by outstanding pitching from Fernando Arango ‘27 and Owen McGreevey ’26, along with timely hitting from Nick Feinstein ’26 and John Carvalho ’26.

In game three, King continued its strong play with an 8–2 win over Eastside Community High School. Luke Cottrell ’28 and Sam Dulski ’26 led the way on the mound, while the offense was sparked again by Nick with an RBI single and Sam, who contributed three RBIs.

Overall, it was a highly successful trip for the Vikings. Beyond the results on the field, the team brought great energy, competed at a high level, and made the most of the experience by building team chemistry and establishing the culture needed for a successful season ahead.

Softball
King Softball got off to a strong start this season during their spring training trip, playing three games and gaining valuable early experience on the field. The opportunity to compete on dirt, face live pitching, and work through real game situations allowed the team to sharpen key fundamentals, including defensive communication, base running, and situational hitting.

Off the field, the team also enjoyed quality time together at Universal, taking advantage of the experience to build camaraderie and strengthen team bonds.

Overall, it was a productive and memorable trip for the Vikings, who are excited to carry this early momentum into the regular season.

Boys Lacrosse
Despite weather delays and widespread TSA disruptions impacting travel across the region, the King Boys Lacrosse team enjoyed a smooth trip and arrived ready to compete. Traveling with KSA, the team stayed at Universal in Orlando, where they were able to take advantage of two park visits, providing a great opportunity for team bonding and building chemistry ahead of the season.

The Vikings trained daily from Saturday through Wednesday, making the most of valuable time on the field. They competed in two strong matchups, first facing a tough Rock Canyon squad. Rock Canyon, a mid-season Colorado program playing its seventh game together, proved to be a challenging opponent, especially as King had only managed three days of outdoor practice back home due to snow. The team responded well, bouncing back with an impressive 8–5 win over Chaparral.

Leadership has been a key strength, with captains Alex Moskowitz ’27, Henry Sklar ’26, and Jackson Andrews ’26 setting the tone both on and off the field. Newcomers Dylan Martin ’28 and Rowan Martin ’29 have made an immediate impact in the midfield with their athleticism, while freshmen Charlie Cahill, Luca Stozinic, Max French, and Matthew Sroka have all emerged as exciting additions to the squad. In goal, a talented group of young goalies is developing well, with returning starter John Lewis ’29 looking sharp in the cage.

Back in Connecticut, the team carried that momentum into a successful scrimmage against Norwalk’s Brien McMahon High School. The Vikings now turn their attention to their season opener today at home on Segalas Field against Frederick Gunn.

It’s shaping up to be an exciting spring for King Boys Lacrosse.

Girls Lacrosse
Girls Lacrosse had a strong week in Orlando, training, competing, and spending long hours at the Universal parks. Stepping right off the bus from the airport on Saturday, the Vikings hit the practice site to train and start working to develop the structure and culture for the season. Opening up play the next morning the Vikings used a solid performance, with some timely late defense, to come out on top of Cheshire Academy in a close game. The team also played a very competitive game with Pomfret Academy, before helping our New Canaan neighbors from St. Luke’s by providing them with a few extra players to allow their game to happen. While the time in Florida is all about team bonding and building, and training for the upcoming spring season, it is also about supporting all of the teams and athletes from around the country that have come together for this special experience. The squad is loaded with talent from all areas of the field and all grades, with Penny Prince ’29 leading the goal scoring, Jordyn Ennis ’26, Greta Malloy ’28, and Kate Moskowitz ’29 covering lots of ground distributing the ball and scoring, and Emma Lange ’27 and Annie Hill ’28 holding down of the defensive side of the field. Several of the younger players also stepped into vital minutes on the field getting their first varsity experience for the Vikings.

The week would of course not be complete without a chance to spend time at the Universal Studios complex, and the girls made the most of the trip. In addition to the time at the parks, they also took part in an exciting scavenger hunt at Universal City Walk and a team dinner at Margaritaville.
The team is poised and ready to step up this spring against some strong competition throughout the season.

Track & Field
King Track & Field sent its largest group of athletes south to Orlando to once again train at the National Track & Field Performance Center. Getting in some great training and lifting sessions at the same location where pros and Olympians train on a regular basis, provided the athletes the chance to develop the skills needed to come back to CT to compete against some very talented and deep teams in the FAA. One morning during the trip, US Olympic star, and 100 meter champion Noah Lyles was seen onsite training!

The benefit of traveling south not only provides the great chance to train, spend time team bonding at the hotel and at the Universal Parks, but also gives the athletes a chance to compete in a Florida high school track meet. This year, the meet was a St. Patrick’s Day special, starting up at 5:00 p.m. and wrapping up late under the lights in the Wildwood Wildcat Invitational in Wildwood, Florida. Giving all athletes a chance to try different events and get some race, jumping, and throwing experience in, it presented the Vikings with opportunities to develop the skills needed to carry them through the spring. Freshman Aniya Garcia impressed in her first meet in the Javelin, Discus, and Shot Put, while Krys Gaston ’27 got back into his stride in the High Jump, Ollie Mansfield ’27 took to the field for the throwing events, Myles Gadson ’28 and Will Fottrell ’29 led the way in the 100 meter dash for the boys, Shelby Davis ’29 and Madison Allen ’28 led the way in the 100 for the girls, and Mason Hauben ’27 set his own personal best mark in the long jump.

Great start for the Vikings, who also spent time team-bonding at the hotel and at Universal to cap off a strong training trip and experience.

Girls and Boys Tennis
Athletes from King Girls and Boys Tennis kicked off the season with an outstanding week of training at Saddlebrook. The squads put in long, productive days on the court, training from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM alongside a talented and dedicated coaching staff.

The week was filled with hard work, skill development, and team bonding. In between sessions, the athletes enjoyed some well-earned recovery time at the pool and hot tub, helping them stay fresh and energized throughout the demanding schedule.

It was a fantastic start to the season, setting a strong foundation for the matches ahead. The team also had the chance to unwind and have some fun together, highlighted by time spent on the beautiful grass courts. A wonderful kickoff for the Vikings as they head into their spring seasons!

Boys & Girls Golf
Athletes from the King Boys and Girls Golf teams traveled to Scottsdale, Arizona, for an unforgettable spring training experience at the Legacy Golf Resort. The trip combined high-level golf with outstanding opportunities for team bonding, helping set the tone for the season ahead.
Throughout the week, both teams enjoyed incredible playing conditions and challenging courses, allowing players to sharpen their skills and compete in a world-class golf environment. Off the course, the group built strong connections, strengthening team chemistry and camaraderie.
The trip culminated in a memorable final round at TPC Scottsdale, providing a truly special experience for all involved and a fitting finish to an outstanding week. An incredible start to the season for King Golf!
