Middle School Conducts a Kindness Campaign

Kindness is central at King, so when a few students found a pocket of free time after school, it was recognized as an opportunity, and “Give Back Tuesday'' was born.

“We thought of community-based partnerships and a way that would really reach home during the holiday season, so we created ‘Give Back Tuesday’,” said Ben Magidson, Associate Head of Middle School and Middle School Dean of Student Life. Magidson worked with the Director of King Cares Service and Student Services Karen Raidt and computer science and digital applications teacher Sue Laramie, in collaboration with other teachers and students to spearhead the initiative.

Beginning in early November, students stayed after school to work on various King Cares Projects. They select an area of interest and volunteer to help the King community with its philanthropic endeavors.

Thus far, the work has included gratitude messages for veterans on Veterans Day, letters of thanks to first responders for Thanksgiving, and volunteering for the after school music program, Project Music. In December, students will make video recordings of children’s stories to be distributed to the Children’s Learning Center.

“We are working with the grade level representatives in the Middle School right now to continue this year round, and hope to have more events planned by the new year,” said Magidson.

From writing cards, making videos, and helping students during Project Music, the Middle School is building a solid foundation of after school participation in King Cares.

Seventh grade student Tyler Phillips has been at King since fourth grade and has become increasingly involved in community service efforts. He shared excitement for deepening his humanitarian engagement with the new Give Back Tuesdays.

“Last Tuesday I stayed after school and wrote letters to firemen to thank them for all they do for the community,” he said. “Participating in events like this gives me an opportunity to express how I feel and show my appreciation to those who do so much to help so many. I’m really happy that King gives students this opportunity.”

Tristan Gemelli ’27 concurs. “It has been a great experience. I feel good being able to provide even just a little bit of support for the firefighters that help us in our everyday lives.”

Students interested in joining the Give Back Tuesday effort should contact Mr. Magidson for more information.
