King’s Strength and Growth Front and Center at the State of the School
Mi-Sun

On October 24, King School held its annual State of the School event on campus, showcasing its ongoing success and vision for the future. The event opened with remarks from Board Chair Mi-Sun Freeman P’22, ’29, who expressed her pride in the school’s achievements, its community, and the dedicated faculty and staff that make King such a special place.

Freeman, a parent of a current King student and an alumna, emphasized the vital role of King’s leadership, faculty, and board in ensuring the school's continued excellence. “Our teachers, coaches, advisors, counselors, and every staff member are deeply committed to our children’s growth and development and academic and personal success," she said, acknowledging the tireless efforts of the school's educators.

King’s financial stability was also highlighted, with Freeman sharing insights into the school’s revenue and expenses, and how its financial model supports the program.

The budget is supported primarily by tuition, she explained, but also benefits from robust fundraising efforts and an endowment that recently surpassed $50 million. These resources help provide a well-rounded and innovative education for King’s students.

In addition to the financial overview, Freeman touched on the success of King’s Strategic Plan, which focuses on academic excellence and is on track for full completion by 2025. Looking ahead, King is already preparing for its next phase of growth and planning with a new strategic design in development.

She highlighted the exciting renovation of the Early Childhood Center as the first project in the school’s comprehensive master plan. “The Early Childhood Center will be followed by an exciting Campus Center, which will include a state-of-the-art Center for Research and Inquiry, a Student Commons, new academic spaces, and a combination of new and renovated athletic and wellness spaces. We are committed to investing in our campus and creating the best possible learning environment for our students,” she said.

The theme of the year, “Making Connections,” took center stage in the second half of the event. Following Freeman’s remarks, Head of School Carol Maoz moderated a student panel. Students shared personal stories and examples of how they experience the theme daily, demonstrating how King fosters connections across academic, extracurricular, and community spaces.

The evening also included moments of celebration and community-building. Before the presentation in the theater, new families were invited to a special cocktail reception, providing them with an opportunity to meet other parents and faculty members. After the formal program, an all-school reception allowed guests to further connect and reflect on the event.

“King remains in an extremely fortunate and strong financial position,” Freeman said as she concluded her remarks with a note of optimism. “We are starting the year from a position of strength, with a community that is more dedicated and talented than ever before.”

As the school continues to grow in enrollment and enhance its facilities, King is well-positioned to uphold its mission of delivering an exceptional and dynamic education for all its students.
