Grandparents and Special Friends Day once again brought joy, laughter, and meaningful connection to the Lower School as students welcomed their cherished guests for a morning of learning, discovery, and community on May 7.

During opening remarks in the lower school gym, Head of School Carol Maoz spoke of the important role the guests play in the students' lives.

“You give our students their sense of identity, their sense of history, and the understanding that they belong to something larger than themselves,” she said. “We hope you leave this morning with a full heart, a sense of great pride, and the knowledge that your place in this community is cherished.”

Maoz’s remarks were echoed by Head of Lower School Sandy Lizarie-Duff, who spoke to her personal interactions with the students.

“I witness every day how deeply your influence shapes our students: their creativity, their sense of humor, their bravery, and their values.”

Annual Fund Committee member David Youngberg P’35 concluded the morning’s speeches, highlighting the impact of the Annual Fund on the King experience, before vocal and instrumental performances by lower school students.

Following the morning reception, guests joined students for classroom activities and collaborative projects, offering a firsthand look at the vibrant daily life of lower school students. 

"I'm very proud of Jack,” said Joyce Weisel GP’34. “I know he works hard here. " 

"This has been a wonderful day. I hear all about his friends at home, so it's nice to put faces to names,” remarked Nick Collins GP’36. “The teachers seem great."  

“Today was a full-circle moment,” shared Carol Brown LHT’87, P’10, ’13, GP’40. “Being in the lower school gym was very surreal, sitting on a campus that I’ve been on since the 70s, and now I’m sitting here as a grandparent.” 

At the day's end, it was clear the event created lasting memories across generations. Inspired by curiosity, creativity, and connection, the morning reflected the warmth and spirit that define the King community.
