Go Vikings!

Girls Volleyball

The varsity team had an intense stretch, starting with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Greenwich Country Day School. After dropping the first set, the Vikings rallied to win the next two, then dropped the fourth before triumphing in a nail-biting fifth set. The team’s determination and trust in one another were key to their victory.

Building on that momentum, they followed up with a dominant 3-0 win on the road against Canterbury School before hosting Sacred Heart Greenwich (SHG) on Wednesday, September 25. In a re-match of last year’s FAA Championship, the Vikings cruised to a 3-0 victory. During the fall of 2023, King dropped only one match all season, which was to SHG, so the win this year was that much more meaningful!

As Homecoming approaches, the team looks forward to their Saturday, September 29, matchup against Rye Country Day School at 1:15 p.m. and is excited for the support of the Viking community. Both JV teams will also be in action on Saturday, with the Blue Team taking the court at 9:30 a.m. against Harvey School and the Red Team match against Cardinal Kung going off at 11:15 a.m. The JV Blue match is the first of ten athletic contests of the day.

Cross Country

King Cross Country will be the first outdoor event on Homecoming, hosting Capital Prep Harbor School for a 10:00 a.m. race on campus. This is the only home race of the season for the Vikings, with the course spanning the entire campus. Please join the teams for the start of the race on the north corner of the Segalas South Turf!

Football

The Vikings continued their winning ways, defeating the previously unbeaten Riverdale Country School 26-14. Chris Ippolito ’25 opened the scoring with a powerful rushing touchdown, setting the tone for the game. Freddy Melton ’26 then connected with Liam McGuire ’25 for a long receiving touchdown, while Liam himself racked up over 100 yards on the ground, adding two rushing touchdowns.

The Vikings’ defense once again showcased their dominance, holding Riverdale to under 50 yards rushing. Jackson Andrews ’26 contributed with a key interception, further bolstering the team's growing reputation for forcing turnovers. The defense was also led by the inside presence of the linemen and linebackers, with Jakari Morgan ’25 and Connor Brown ’25, Alex Zaken ’25, Jack Levine ’25, and Brandon Ricketts ’25 stopping the run and putting pressure on the quarterback all game long.

With this victory, the Vikings have now won two straight games, carrying momentum into their Homecoming matchup against Hopkins School at 3:30 p.m. Before the game, a special ceremony will be held for the four-year and senior players on the team along with their families. Please join us to celebrate and recognize all that these players have given to the program.

The JV team followed up with a win of their own in their first game of the season on Monday. Traveling to Hopkins, the Vikings used big play after big play to build their lead and held on for a 21-20 victory! Fernando Arango ’27 had two rushing touchdowns, while Myles Gadson ’28 added a 60-yard touchdown run of his own! Blake Ansel ’28 and Matt Robinson ’27 each contributed with 2-point conversions. Mason Hauben ’27 had an interception and big run back, while Luke Angelov ’28 also had an interception to stop a 2-point conversion. The Vikings also made a number of other key defensive plays all over the field, led by multiple sacks and big tackles from David Adamski ’28. It was a complete team effort for their first win of the season!

Varsity Girls Soccer

Another strong week for Vikings Varsity Girls Soccer with two road wins! The first was a 5-1 win over Hopkins, followed by a 1-0 clean sheet victory against Masters School. Taylor Ansel ’25 had the lone goal of the game only minutes into the second half, and Ava Angelov ’25 was outstanding in goal to help secure the shutout. The team is looking to carry this momentum into Thursday's important FAA league match against St. Luke's School and into our Homecoming game on Saturday against non-league United Nations International School.

Varsity Boys Soccer

The Varsity Boys Soccer team faced three strong opponents in Frederick Gunn School, powerhouse Millbrook School, and Canterbury School, coming up short in each contest. Clawing back to draw within one goal against Frederick Gunn, they were not able to find the net for the equalizer, falling 4-3. Putting all of the pressure on Canterbury late in the game, the Vikings had a few key point-blank attempts turned away. It was a hard-fought ending to a 2-1 loss. While the results weren’t what the team hoped for, valuable experience was gained in the process. The squad is now better prepared for the challenges ahead, including a matchup with Forman School at 2:15 p.m. this Saturday for Homecoming. The JV Boys team was in action on Thursday against Greenwich Country Day School and will welcome in French-American School of New York for a 10:15 a.m. game on Homecoming!

Field Hockey

Varsity Field Hockey faced a challenging match against Sacred Heart Greenwich on Saturday, September 21, where they truly had to dig deep and rely on one another. The effort put forth by every player was commendable, and it showcased the resilience of the team. The squad bounced back against The Ethel Walker School on Wednesday, September 25, and showed even more resolve. After going down 1-0, the Vikings responded with four straight scores to earn an impressive 4-2 win. King was led in the game by two of the team’s youngest stars, Grade 9’s Riley O’Neill ’28, who had one goal, and Grade 8’s Penny Prince ’29, who scored the other three!
Meanwhile, the JV squad also took on Sacred Heart and demonstrated incredible spirit and tenacity throughout the game. Their dedication did not go unnoticed, and it has been inspiring to see such passion from the younger Vikings players.

Both teams are excited to showcase their skills on Homecoming, with JV hosting Greenwich Academy at 10:00 a.m. and Varsity to follow against Hamden Hall at 12:15 p.m.

Crew

Although King Crew won’t be competing on Homecoming, they will be hard at work on the water at RowAmerica Greenwich, preparing for the first race of the fall on Sunday, October 6. The athletes will travel to Hartford for the Head of the Riverfront Regatta. This will kick off four straight weekends of events, which include the Head of the Housatonic on Sunday, October 13 in New Haven, the Head of the Charles from Friday, October 18, to Sunday, October 20, in Boston, and the Head of the Schuylkill from Friday, October 25, to Sunday, October 27, in Philadelphia. King will be racing different lineups of singles, doubles, and quads in all of the regattas.
