King Math Team celebrates 20th anniversary with 2nd place finish

The King Math Team is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The team was first established by Eileen McQueen, Middle School and Upper School Math teacher, in 1998. Since then, hundreds of students have participated and competed in a pool of 27 Fairfield County public and private school teams.

In the first season, there were five students who participated. At the beginning of its existence, the team struggled a bit but as time passed, more students joined and the team became stronger in their ability to solve harder mathematical problems from different mathematical topics. About 10-12 years ago, the team was invited to participate in the State Math competition. Since then, students have consistently placed in the top third of best teams in Fairfield County. This has allowed the team to participate in the State competition every year. A couple of years ago, they were selected to participate in the New England Math competition.

This year has been very rewarding. At the most recent meet, held in late November, our team placed second behind Greenwich High School! King is now ranked #5 based on the combined score of three meets. Dr. Victoria Khiznichenko, Mathematics Chair and Math Team Advisor, adds, "This ranking is all due to the excellence and dedication of our team. A special thank you goes to Mallory Ehlers '19, Ashley Xu '19, Nic Perez '19, Nick Jiang '22, Ronald Harvey '22, and Clare Liao '23, who helped the team achieve the second place finish in November. I would also like to extend thanks to our excellent co-captains, Annie Michalski '19 and Cameron Raker '19, who organize our Monday meetings after school with snacks, laughter, and Math Team problem-solving fun in the Academic Center. Go King Math Team and Happy 20th anniversary!"

The next meet will be held on January 9 at Wilton High School. Good luck to our mathematicians.
