At King, we strongly believe that a top quality Professional Growth and Development (PG&D) program is the cornerstone of our success. Our faculty are talented, committed, knowledgeable, energetic, and passionate about their work. They understand that in order to be the very best, they must be lifelong learners as well as professional educators, and they know that the two are intimately linked.
King's Summer Sabbatical grants were established to provide funding to support teachers who wish to explore topics and ideas and to develop their knowledge and expertise in a manner that will positively impact the work that they do with students. Each year, King awards four one-time Summer Sabbatical grants in late May or early June, to be used for work that summer. The Sabbaticals can consist of a wide variety of activities but not limited to: traveling, quietly studying and reflecting at a remote location, reading books connected to a new course, participating in volunteer work, developing a web site to manage an entire course, interviewing experts, and conducting research.
Congratulations to our Faculty who were awarded Summer Sabbaticals this year. They will begin their travels and studies in July:
Daniel Block, English Faculty: Daniel won the McDermott sabbatical, established in 1989 by the McDermott Family. Daniel will pursue a project titled: "Screen Reading and the Legacy of Print: New Curricula in Digital Literacy." He will be exploring the question: what can an English teacher can do to perpetuate the legacy of deep reading -- with its regimen of sustained attention, careful reflection, and active engagement - in a digital world? He will assess the growing body of research and commentary that addresses this topic.
Tricia Manganello, English Faculty: Tricia teaches Shakespeare's plays, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, and Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse in her AP literature course. To deepen her understanding of this complicated literature and to place these writers more carefully in their historical and literary contexts, she will study these authors and their contemporaries in the UK this summer, examining primary sources and literary artifacts.
Elizabeth Messinger, English Faculty: Elizabeth's sabbatical, "Rights and Roots on the Road" provides an opportunity for Elizabeth to conduct course-related research related to two new Senior Electives / Advanced Seminar courses she's developing for 2019-2020. Both classes build on Elizabeth's work helping students and colleagues enhance their lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion. During her sabbatical, Elizabeth will take a two-part road trip tracing civil rights in the south and family roots in the west.
Cara Grimaldi, Performing Arts Faculty: Cara will travel to Peru to study music and Peruvian culture and hike Machu Picchu in preparation for the new Global Studies program in Lower School that will focus on Central and South America next year. Cara will bring back greater understanding, artifacts, photos, and personal experience to inform her authentic teaching.
