Grade 4 Students Build Models of Human Lungs

On Wednesday, March 8, Grade 4 built models of human lungs as part of their unit learning about the respiratory system. Using recycled water bottles, rubber bands, balloons, straws, and putty, each student fabricated their own working model. Students learned about the parts of the respiratory and their functions, gas exchange and what happens to the oxygen that we inhale as well as the carbon dioxide waste that we exhale. This hands-on project enabled students to visualize how the diaphragm contracts, moving downwards to create more space in your chest cavity to pull air into your lungs then relaxes and moves upwards to help push air out of your lungs. Shevon Morris, LS Science Faculty, organized this activity for the students, "We use models in Lower School Science to represent ideas, objects, or processes and explain phenomena that the students cannot directly experience. By building a model of a lung and manipulating it, students gain a visual understanding of how the parts of the respiratory system all work together."
