After School Enrichment & Care

For Lower School students, King offers both After School Enrichment and After School Care options. Please find information listed below on the Enrichment Classes and After School Care tabs.

Enrichment Classes

King is pleased to offer After School Enrichment classes to suit a variety of interests.

Registration for these classes is by email only. Please contact the Faculty as listed below directly with any questions or to register for a class. If you have any questions concerning After School Enrichment Classes in general, please contact Karen Smith, Assistant to Head of Lower School, at ksmith@kingschoolct.org or (203) 322-3496 Ext. 310.

Please note, Enrichment Classes take place when school is in session. There are no classes during School Breaks. In the event of a Snow Day, classes will be re-scheduled for another date.

Spring 2018

Zumba Kids

ZUMBA KIDS

Come shake, move, and get fit! Zumba Kids is an innovative dance fitness class, which offers a fun, energetic way to promote a healthy lifestyle through movement and exercise. There are many benefits to Zumba Kids some of which include; improved coordination, balance, muscle tone, memory, endurance, and creativity. Students will also learn cool dance steps, routines, and games while enjoying 100% kid friendly music.

Be sure not to miss out on all the fun!

The class will consist of a warm-up, dance steps/routines, game time, and cool-down.

Students need to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing and sneakers. Students should also bring a snack, towel, and a bottle of water.

GRADES: K-2

Protect Your Environment (PYE)

Students in Grades 3-5, do you want to make a difference in the future of our planet? Learn how we can protect our environment and guide others in our community to respect our world. Work and learn in the natural space around King as well as out in the Stamford community. The content of the sessions vary to include such things as working in the garden, learning about animals, cooking and creating hands-on projects.

New Covenant Soup Kitchen

Students in Grades 3-5 serve dinner at the New Covenant Soup Kitchen in downtown Stamford. Bake cookies in the Lower School kitchen from 2:50-3:45 p.m. to serve for dessert and return to school by 5:50 p.m. Meet Mrs. Eagleton in the LS Lobby at 2:50 p.m.

Westover & Franklin Common Preschool

Students in Grades 3-5 read, play, and do art projects with children ages 3-5 years old at the Westover & Franklin Common Preschools in Stamford. We also bring books to read and leave them to add to their classroom library. The van leaves King at 2:55 p.m. and returns at 4:15 p.m. Please meet Mrs. Eagleton in the LS Lobby at 2:50 p.m.

King Chess Club

After School Spanish

The purpose of the Lower School Spanish Enrichment Club is to provide children with the opportunity to engage in supplemental, structured choice language activities that encourage children to explore their world and their own creativity and interests. Every week, students will read, write, speak and listen in Spanish. All meetings are taught in full-immersion Spanish in order to build confidence, motivate students and enhance language skills. Art, story-telling, games, music and multimedia activities in Spanish will be incorporated into every week’s meeting.

Introduction to Making

Ms Morris, Lower School Science Teacher and Mr Waldman, Director of Technology will guide students in grade 3-5 through several projects to introduce them to the concept of “making”. Projects may include the use of squishy circuits, Chibi Technology, MakeDo cardboard construction, snapino, sewing, Little Bits and much more. The club will run on Wednesday.

Stop Motion Animation

THIS PROGRAM IS CURRENTLY FULL AND WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING students.

Students will learn how to animate using clay, paper and legos using icreate animation software. All supplies will be provided. Great for students new to animation as well as those that have had prior experience. Students work at their own pace to create their own movie shorts.

GRADES: 2-5

Protect Your Environment (PYE)

Students in Grades 3-5, do you want to make a difference in the future of our planet? Learn how we can protect our environment and guide others in our community to respect our world. Work and learn in the natural space around King as well as out in the Stamford community. Tend to the King garden, learn about local plants and animals, and take field trips to sites that teach about environmental needs, such as Soundwaters, Animal Embassy, and the Nature Center. Meet Mrs. Bruno and Mrs. Benedetto in the LS Lobby at 2:50 p.m.

Beginner Dance

This class teaches the importance of movement in a variety of ways through a variety of disciplines. As well, dancers learn to coordinate muscles to move through proper positions.

Dancers will have the opportunity to express and communicate their ideas and to be given a platform to make creative decisions. This decision making promotes self-esteem and independent thinking. Learning steps and phrases, help to expand their movement vocabulary and help give the opportunity for their voice to be heard. Given this freedom, it will encourage them to reach beyond what comes easy by using their imagination.

Beginner dance incorporates the fundamentals of Creative Movement, Ballet, & Hip Hop, enabling the dancer to express their love for movement and music in a fun and caring environment. Dancers will leave this class with the basic foundations of dance.

GRADES: PreK-Grade 2

Invent with littleBits

INVENT WITH LITTLEBITS

Tinker with littleBits circuits to create your own simple machines. Students will learn how to design and create using littleBits components. Step-by-step instructions are used in the beginning, so no experience is necessary. Once the student feels comfortable they will explore additional littleBits and create their own projects.

Lego Mindstorms Robotics - Beginner Class

LEGO MINDSTORMS ROBOTICS - BEGINNER CLASS

Students will build and program robots using the LEGO Mindstorms Robotics Invention Systems. Students will learn mechanical design, construction, programming, and teamwork skills. In small teams using LEGO blocks, motors, and sensors, students explore gears and pulleys, build and control a line drawing robot, and ultimately build a robot that can find its own way and avoid obstacles. Students use a computer to teach their robot to move, react, and make sounds in order to solve challenges. Class size is limited to 8 students.

Math Olympiad

MATH OLYMPIAD

Students who join math team will sharpen their problem-solving skills in a unique collaborative environment as they work with teammates to solve challenging problems each week. These weekly sessions will help prepare students for five monthly MOEMS (MathOlympiad for Elementary and Middle School Students) competitions from November through March. The competitions will help students to work under pressure, refine their computational skills and compete at a national level. This is a challenging program and commitment, ability and a passion for math is required to join the Math Team.

Please note: The math team requires a 6-month commitment from October through March. Team participants must make every effort to be present for every contest and weekly meeting. Snack will be provided.

Lunch Time Chess

LUNCH TIME CHESS

Chess is a game for people of all ages. You can learn to play at any age and in chess, unlike in many other sports, you don't ever have to retire. Age is also not a factor when you're looking for an opponent --young can play old and old can play young.

After School Care

King is pleased to offer after school care for children in Full or Half Day Preschool-Grade 5. Qualified Staff and US students interact with the children in a casual, fun environment after school.

Registration: Registration for After School Care is by email only. To enroll in the After School Care Program, please download this form and email it to Karen Smith (ksmith@kingschoolct.org). You will receive a confirmation email once your email has been received.

Facilities: Most activities take place within the LS Media Center, where children have access to books, magazines, computers, and cozy seating. Weather permitting, the program takes advantage of King’s fields and playground.

Hours of Operation: Monday-Friday, 2:45-5:30 p.m., when school is in session. There is no After School on early dismissal days.

Policies:

  • Pick up is 5:30 p.m.
  • A late fee of $25.00 will be charged after 5:35 p.m. to defray the additional staffing costs.
  • Your child will be automatically reenrolled in the After School Program each trimester unless you notify us otherwise.
  • Your child will not be released to anyone other than the person you designate without written permission. A photo ID will be required. For the safety of the children, this policy is strictly enforced.
  • If an emergency occurs and you are not able to pick up your son/daughter on time, please call the After School Program office at (203) 322-3496, Ext. 398. or email Karen Raidt at kraidt@kingschoolct.org

Fees: The After School Program fees are based on the number of school days and are billed on a trimester basis by the Business Office.

  • One Day: $330
  • Two Days: $660
  • Three Days: $990
  • Four Days: $1,320
  • Five Days: $1,650
Drop-In Usage: If for any reason you cannot pick up your son/daughter by 3:00 p.m., the After School Program will accommodate students on a drop-in basis for a fee of $50.00 for the day.
